STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford's rebuilt pitching staff is off to an impressivestart.

The Cardinal made it to the College World Series the past two seasons withJason Young, Justin Wayne and Brian Sager leading its rotation. But Young andWayne were both high draft picks in June, and Sager transferred to GeorgiaTech.

Coach Mark Marquess needed to replace the 58 victories they combined for thepast two seasons. Jeremy Guthrie, Tim Cunningham and Jeff Bruksch helpedStanford to a 13-4 start going into the weekend.

Guthrie, a transfer from Brigham Young, was 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA. Cunningham,a part-time starter for the Cardinal last season, is 4-0 with a 1.53 ERA. AndBruksch, who had 13 saves as Stanford's closer last year, is 3-0 with a 3.72ERA and earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors after a 3-0 shutout of SantaClara. He also has a streak of 17 1-3 consecutive scoreless innings.

'We have received a solid starting pitching effort from all of our startersin pretty much every game we've played this season,' Marquess said. 'Everygame we've played, we've had a chance to win primarily because of this pitchingstaff and defense.'
