Gymnasts Fall To No. 5 Stanford, 197.050-195.050

March 2, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 13 Oregon State gymnastics team had to count two falls as the Beavers lost a dual meet to No. 5 Stanford, 197.050-195.050, on Friday evening.

'We improved our Regional Qualifying Score slightly, but we didn't adjust as well as I'd hoped to the equipment, and we need to learn to do that before regionals,' said coach Tanya Chaplin.

OSU's goal of going 24-for-24 ended early, as Soni Meduna fell on her dismount on what was shaping up to be a solid routine for the junior. Meduna scored a 9.30, but OSU's next four competitors made up for it with marks of 9.80 or better. Elizabeth Jillson led the way with a 9.90, which ended up tying Stanford's Lindsay Wing for first place. OSU also got a fifth-place 9.85 from Lindsay Nelson, a 9.825 from Lara Degenhardt and a 9.80 from Annie Campbell. The Beavers then looked to Stephanie Bychowski to erase Meduna's fall from the team score, but Bychowski fell twice for an 8.80 mark to give OSU a 48.675 on its first event.

The Beavers regained their momentum with a six-for-six outing for a 48.675 on vault, with Katrina Severin scoring a 9.90 to win the event for the seventh time this year. Degenhardt placed fifth with a 9.80, while Campbell chipped in a 9.675. Meduna and Elaine Yoder each scored 9.65, and Nelson rounded things out with a 9.625.

Meanwhile, the Cardinal had one fall on both vault and bars, but neither had to count as Stanford took a 98.250-97.350 lead after two rotations.

OSU's falls continued over to floor, where the Beavers had to count a 9.40 from Marissa Bruch after both she and Meduna (9.15) fell. Otherwise, OSU turned in some impressive scores, including a team-best 9.925 from Severin. Degenhardt scored a 9.90, while Campbell earned a 9.875 and Yoder a 9.70.

After three rotations, the Cardinal extended its lead to 147.450-146.150. Stanford had a fall on beam but didn't have to count it.

Severin continued her outstanding meet with a 9.85 on beam, while Bychowski made up for her fall on bars with a 9.875 on beam to place third on that event. OSU also got 9.75 routines out of Nelson and Bruch, while Yoder scored a 9.675. Campbell fell for a 9.275, but the Beavers didn't have to count her score.

Stanford rounded out the meet with a 49.600 on floor, with four scores of 9.90 or better. Wing and Lise Leveille won floor with their scores of 9.95.

'What I told the team afterwards was that no one is going to hand them nationals on a platter. We have the capability, but we have to take advantage of our opportunities and capitalize on our chances to improve our RQS,' Chaplin said. 'They need to learn to hit under any circumstances. Even in a situation where the scores were tighter, they showed they could still score a 196. But they need to come together as a team and really focus as a team.'
