Women's Golf Tied for Fourth After First Round at Spartan Invite
March 5, 2001
Salinas, CA - The University of Washington women's golf team posted an 11-under 299 to finish day one of the Spartan Invitational in a tie for fifth place at the Corral de Tierra Country Club. The Huskies, coming off their first tournament victory of the season last week at the Bay Area Classic, remain within striking distance of leader New Mexico State after the first 18 holes. New Mexico State is the only team under par after day one, carding a 1-under 287.
The Huskies were again led by Lindsay Morgan and Kelli Kamimura, who continued their own recent success, finishing third and first, respectively at last week's Bay Area Classic. Morgan, a freshman, is tied for fifth place after round one, matching her career-low round with an even-par 72. Morgan is just two shots behind leaders Alena Sharp and Rachel Bailey of New Mexico State, who both shot 2-under 70. Kamimura, meanwhile, is in 14th place, along with senior Elisha Au. Both fired 2-over 74 to stay four shots off the lead.
Bianca Clark, competing for the first time since the fall for the Huskies, shot 7-over while Louise Friberg finished play at 8-over. Washington's Michelle Grafos, competing as an individual, also shot 7-over.
The tournament continues Tuesday with second round play beginning at 8 a.m.
