Pac-10 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week (3/5/01)

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC senior shortstop Seth Davidson has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and STANFORD sophomore right-hander Jeremy Guthrie has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for February 27-March 5, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Davidson, from San Diego, Calif., batted .500 (7-for-14) with a triple, one RBI and two stolen bases. One of the stolen bases was on a double steal with runners on first and third as he stole home. Davidson is now only one theft away from tying the school career record (57).

Guthrie, from Ashland, Ore., won his fourth consecutive start in a non-Conference game against California. In eight innings pitched he struck out a career-high 10 batters and held the Golden Bears without an earned run, while allowing only four hits.

The Player of the Week honor is the first for Davidson in his career, and the 46th selection all-time for USC. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first for Guthrie in his career, and the 55th selection all-time for STANFORD.

Also nominated for Player of the Week were Jeremy West, ASU, Curtis Davis, OSU, Carlos Quentin, STAN, Matt Pearl, UCLA, Jay Garthwaite, WASH. Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week were Mike Esposito, ASU, Thad Johnson, OSU, Jon Brandt, UCLA, Brian Bannister/Mark Prior, USC.
