UC Riverside Upsets Baseball In 6-4 Victory

March 6, 2001

LOS ANGELES -- Center fielder Brian Walhbrink delivered a go-ahead, two-run single in the top of the seventh Tuesday and the UC Riverside Highlanders upset the No. 4 USC Trojans, 6-4, at Dedeaux Field.

The Highlanders (6-13) had timely hitting and were able to take advantage of miscues by the Trojans (12-5).

USC had three runners that were caught stealing, including two runners at third base, and one runner picked off. Trojan pitchers struck out 17 batters, but also allowed 10 walks.

It was the second time in the 12-game all-time series between the two teams that UC Riverside registered a victory against USC. The Highlanders defeated the Trojans, 6-3, on April 11, 1989, at Dedeaux Field.

David Gibson (1-1) picked up the win for the Highlanders while Chris Smith threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the season. Chad Clark (1-2) took the loss for the Trojans.

In the first, USC got on the scoreboard on a sacrifice fly by Bill Peavey with the bases loaded, scoring Seth Davidson. However, Brian Barre was caught stealing in a rundown to end the inning.

Brandon Smith started the second for UC Riverside by hammering a solo shot to center off USC starter Fraser Dizard to tie the game at 1-1.

With runners at first and third with one out in the fourth, the Trojans appeared to get out of the inning when Davidson took a ground ball and touched second, but he threw a one-hopper to first, allowing Jaymie Torres to reach on the fielder's choice. Pinch hitter Adam Seuss then hit an RBI double down the third base line for a 3-1 UC Riverside lead.

The Trojans added two in the fifth to tie the game and took the lead on an RBI single by Michael Moon in the sixth before the Highlanders rallied in the seventh and added another run in the eighth.

USC had runners at first and second with one out, but Rob Garibaldi grounded into a 3-6-1 double play to end the inning.

The Trojans had one final chance in the ninth with runners at second and third and one out, but Barre struck out looking and Josh Persell grounded out to the shortstop to give the Highlanders the win.

USC will host Hosei University (Japan) in an exhibition tomorrow at Dedeaux Field. The game time has been changed to a 4 p.m. start. Admission is free.

The Trojans will then travel to Stanford for a non-conference series beginning on Friday (March 9) at 6 p.m. at Sunken Diamond. Saturday (March 10) and Sunday's (March 11) games will begin at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
