March 6, 2001
Los Angeles, CA -- The weather gods were finally kind to the Bruins today as rainstorms subsided and the Bruins were able to defeat USC 5-2 this afternoon at Marks Stadium on the USC campus. UCLA improve to 9-0 (3-0 Pac-10) and USC falls to 7-2 with the loss.
UCLA's No. 1 team of Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Julien Rojer got off to a rocky start after losing to Ryan Moore and Nick Rainey 8-4. But the Bruins rebounded and took the next two double matches. Marcin Matkowski and Travis Rettenmaier, fresh from winning the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships, continued their winning ways at No. 2, defeating Andrew Park and Damian Stizzo 8-5. Tobias Clemens and Lassi Ketola clinched the doubles point by defeating Torres and Collins at No. 3, 8-3.
In singles, USC got its first point after Clemens retired a 3-2 match to USC's Spizzo. The Trojans' other point came at center court when 17th-ranked Andrew Park upset 10th-ranked Rojer 6-3, 6-4. The Bruins responded and sealed the victory when Marcin Matkowski defeated Ruben Torres at No. 4, 6-2, 6-4.
The Bruins return to action this Friday against Arizona State and Saturday against Arizona. Both matches will be played at the LA Tennis Center with Friday's match schedule to begin at 1:30 and Saturday's contest is set to begin at 11:00 am.
