Los Angeles, Calif. -- With career-high efforts from seniors Tashara Carter and Denise Woods, the USC women's basketball team upset No. 22 Washington 88-76 in front of 693 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena Thursday night. The win also put an end to the Huskies' three-game win streak and their hopes of clinching sole possession of the Pac-10 title.
USC improves to 12-15 overall and 7-10 in the Pac-10, while Washington drops to 19-8 overall, 12-5 in conference play.
The Women of Troy led by as many as 18 points at the 7:47 mark before Washington went on a 22-7 run in the final seven minutes of the half to enter the break down by three, 40-37.
To start the second half each team traded points until a three-pointer by the Huskies' Giuliana Mendiola tied the game for the first time at 42-42 (18:31). Though knotting the score once more, 44-44, Washington was never able to capture a lead. USC led by as many as nine, four different times until the two-minute mark. With 1:46 left on the clock, the Huskies sent the Trojans to the line eight times and USC guard Jessica Cheeks hit 7-of-10 down the stretch for a final 88-76 Women of Troy victory.
Carter - a four-year starter for USC who will play her final game on Saturday - led both squads with a career-best 24 points, while Woods followed with 20. Carter is just 15 points away from becoming the 16th player in USC history to collect 1,000 points in her career. Freshmen Ebony Hoffman and Jessica Cheeks added 17 and 11 points apiece. Carter also contributed eight rebounds in the effort. USC outrebounded (39 to 33) and outshot (51.7 to 45.5 percent) the Huskies.
Washington had four players finish in doubles figures, including Andrea Lalum (19 points), Megan Franza (18), Giuliana Mendiola (13) and Loree Payne (10).
USC will play its final game of the 2001 season on Saturday, March 10, against Washington State at the Sports Arena. Prior to the 1 p.m. tipoff, Carter and Woods will be honored in the 'Senior Salute.'
