Cal Baseball Loses to UC Santa Barbara, 9-2

BERKELEY, CA - Led by the pitching of junior right-hander James Garcia and a 13-hit attack, UC Santa Barbara defeated Cal, 9-2, Friday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Bears have now lost three straight games and go to 10-8 on the season, while the Gauchos, winners of six straight, improve to 9-4.

Cal struggled against Garcia (3-1, 9.0 innings, seven hits, two runs, seven walks, six strikeouts), who threw his first complete game of the season despite walking seven batters. The Bears did leave 11 runners on base.

The game was close most of the way. Cal scored a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI ground out by sophomore Ben Conley. UC Santa Barbara responded by scoring two runs in the top of the third off of Bear starter Trevor Hutchinson (2-3, 7.0 innings, eight hits, five runs, one walk, four strikeouts) on a two-run single up the middle by Jared Schumaker.

The contest remained 2-1 until the Gauchos pulled away with three runs in the eighth inning on RBI singles by Chad Peshke and Dave Molidor and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Von Schell. UC Santa Barbara followed with four runs in the top of the ninth off of Cal freshman reliever Brian Montalbo on RBI singles by Mike Kolbach and Von Schell and a two-run double by Molidor. Kolbach (3-for-5, RBI) and Molidor (3-for-5, double, three RBI) finished with three-hits apiece for the Gauchos

Cal did score a run in the bottom of the ninth on a lead-off homer by freshman shortstop Jeff Dragicevich, his first collegiate home run. Bear freshman center fielder Brian Horwitz was 3-for-5 with a double and extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Cal will next host UC Santa Barbara in the second game of the three-game series, Saturday, Mar. 10 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
