FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Washington State University's Benson Jones finished 13th in the triple jump Saturday, at the NCAA Div. I Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center, in Fayetteville, Ark.
Jones, a redshirt sophomore from Concord, Calif., soared to a distance of 15.47m/50-feet, 9 1/4 inches for 13th place in the triple jump. Louisiana State's Walter Davis won the event with a leap of 16.89m/55-5.
Jones' longest triple jump of 52-10 3/4 came at the Wolf Pack Invitational Meet Feb. 3, at Reno. He has had five triple jump competitions this indoor season, all with marks over 50-feet.
Friday night at the NCAA Championships, Jones finished 10th in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.57m/24-10 and earned All-America honors.
Washington State Head Coach Rick Sloan said, 'Benson was a bit flat today. I think the long jump (Friday) took a little something out of him and his heel was bothering him a little bit. The final jump that he had was a foul, one of the few fouls he's had the entire indoor season. It looked like it might have been far enough to get him in the finals - around 52 feet - but because it was a foul it wasn't measured.
'Now we'll start getting ready for the outdoor season. We go down to Cal next weekend and see what we can do there. Hopefully we can get things lit back up again, get some good performances, and get the outdoor season off to a good start.'
The Cougars open the 2001 outdoor season Saturday, March 17, at Berkeley, Calif., in a meet against host California, UCLA, and Washington.
