March 10, 2001
BERKELEY, CA - The No. 10-ranked women's tennis team (7-2, 4-2 Pac-10) grabbed its first shutout of the season, in addition to a sweep of the Arizona schools, after downing the Wildcats (5-5, 1-5 Pac-10) today at the Hellman Tennis Courts, 7-0. The Bears were coming off a strong win yesterday, after defeating the No. 8-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils, 4-3.
Cal started off the day falling in the No. 2 doubles spot, however they grabbed the point after Anita Kurimay/Raquel Kops Jones defeated Michelle Gough/Sophie Regnier at the No. 1 spot (8-4), and Christina Fusano/Sekita Grant defeated Brooke Taylor/Perrine Pernin at the No. 3 spot (8-1).
In singles, all six players won in straight sets against their Arizona opponents. Senior all-american Anita Kurimay had been moving up the singles lineup that last three matches, playing yesterday at the No. 2 spot. Kurimay held down the No. 1 spot for the Bears for the first time all season, and for the first time since May 20 last year against the Cardinal in the NCAA final four. Kurimay defeated No. 74-ranked Michell Gough of Arizona, 6-1, 6-1.
Sophomore Christina Fusano won at No. 2, defeating Debbie Larocque, 6-2, 6-4, while freshman Raquel Kops-Jones knocked off Sophie Regnier, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot. At No. 5, freshman Catherine Lynch rebounded from a tough tie-breaker set loss to ASU's Mhairi Brown yesterday, and had a strong outing against Arizona's Perrine Pernin, defeating her 6-4, 6-0.
The Bears will host Purdue next, Wednesday, March 14, before hosting Texas, Friday, March 16 at the Hellman Tennis Courts.
