No. 15 Softball Falls To No. 7 Fresno State and No. 1 UCLA

March 10, 2001

FRESNO, Calif. - Oregon State's softball team dropped a pair of games in second-day action of the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic on Saturday.

The No. 15 ranked Beavers fell to No. 7 Fresno State, 2-0 in the first game and were knocked off by No. 1 UCLA, 3-2 in the nightcap.

Fresno State scored both of its runs in the first inning, managing four hits in the skein and a walk against OSU pitcher Monica Hoffman. The Beavers struggled on the offensive end, picking up just three hits in the contest.

'I felt like we played tentative and afraid to lose,' said Oregon State head coach Kirk Walker. 'Fresno State was on fire in the first inning. Offensively we never got started - our team effort and energy was disappointing.'

The Beavers came out strong in the second game, taking an early lead on the top-ranked Bruins.

'We played our game against UCLA,' said Walker. 'We were focused with a lot of energy and had some consistent offensive production.'

Oregon State got on the board in the fourth inning. Shelly Prochaska doubled down the leftfield line and advanced to third when Clare Burnum hit a two-out single. Traci Feldt's single to left field knocked in Prochaska and gave OSU a 1-0 lead.

Oregon State added another run in the sixth inning when Burnum's single scored senior Brooke Rutschman.

UCLA scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning to tie things up and Lupe Brambila's one-out homerun in the bottom of the seventh gave the undefeated Bruins the victory.

Prochaska finished the game a perfect 2-for-2 while Burnum went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

'Shelly Prochaska did a good job hitting all day,' commented Walker. 'Crystal Draper pitched a beautiful game, but UCLA had some timely hitting.'

Draper, a junior hurler, allowed just four hits in the contest.

'Hopefully we'll be able to play with this kind of energy from here on out,' added Walker.

Oregon State continues tournament action Sunday with a 9 a.m. contest against New Mexico State followed by a 1 p.m. match-up with DePaul.
