No. 4 Softball Blanks No. 12 Iowa, 3-0, To Win Pool B At NIST
March 9, 2001
SUNNYVALE, CA - The No. 4 California Golden Bears battled the No. 12 Iowa Hawkeyes to a scoreless 0-0 tie through three innings, but a sophomore Veronica Nelson bomb in the top of the fourth, gave the Bears a 1-0 lead and eventually went on to win the third game of pool play at the National Invitational Softball Tournament, 3-0.
The Bears squandered a scoring opportunity in the second with runners on second and third and two outs, but a senior Pauline Dueas pop out to the second baseman ended the threat.
The Hawkeyes in the sixth, with a runner on second after a walk and a stolen base, got their first hit of the game to left field. Dueas came up throwing to the plate and sophomore Courtney Scott blocked the plate perfectly as the throw was on line, gunning the Iowa runner at the plate for the third out of the sixth.
The Bears added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. With the bases full of Bears, Dueas sent a fly ball to the center fielder, but an untimely Iowa error allowed senior Amber Phillips and junior Jocelyn Forest to score and give the Cal an insurmountable, 3-0 lead.
Forest, earning her second win of the tournament and 13th on the season, continues her record scoreless inning streak. With seven more scoreless innings against the Hawkeyes, Forest now ranks ninth in the NCAA with 67 consecutive scoreless innings pitched. In the game, Forest struckout 13 batters, walked two and allowed a single hit in the sixth and another single in the seventh.
Bracket play begins tomorrow, with the Bears entering the double-elimination championship bracket play and the first game to begin at noon against Long Beach State, who Cal defeated, 3-0, last weekend at the Fullerton Worth Invitational.
