Bibby And Player Quotes On NCAA Tournament

March 11, 2001

Quotes from USC Head Coach Henry Bibby and Trojan players on receiving a No. 6 seed in the East Regional in the 2001 NCAA Tournament.

(On making the NCAA tourney): 'I thought last year was the start of it, where we started to make some noise nationally. This year, it all came together.

'We played some good teams this year and the only one we didn't play well against was Arizona. We had some tough games. That was a big positive for me.

(On being seeded sixth): 'I'm just happy to be playing and happy to get the opportunity. Of course, we wish we were seeded higher, but we finished fourth in the Pac-10 and lost some games we shouldn't have lost.

(On the bracket pairings): 'I know Eddie Sutton. I know how tough Oklahoma State is and the kind of year they've had. And, Al Skinner is probably my best friend in college. We talk about every week. It's an interesting bracket, an interesting challenge.

'We have a lot of weapons if people try to stop one player. You've seen that this year.

(On how USC is playing now): 'We didn't have a tough time with either Washington team this past week. We were very focused. We won those two games convincingly.

(On the team's lack of celebration when USC was announced into the NCAAs): 'This isn't a celebrating type of team. It's laid back. They're starting to think who they play next.

'We're going to try to win one game, the one in front of us. That's what's important.

(On Oklahoma State): 'I haven't seen any Oklahoma State games. I don't know anything about them, other than the situation with the plane crash. I'm more worried about us. Which USC team will show up. I believe it'll be the one from the Washington games.

'We did have some ups and downs this year, but it was a good year. The upsetting thing is we didn't have Jeff Trepagnier and have our team at full strength for the whole year. I had us winning 26 games and that was with Jeff. I wasn't far from that, considering we gave away about three games. You just saw the Jeff we wish we had all year. When he does play well, he's very, very good.

'We have kind of found ourselves in our play now. You saw that in the last four or five games.

(On the turning point of the season): 'When you make shots, your confidence goes up. We started to make shots at the end of the Oregon game (a comeback win). When you do that and do that one the road, your confidence goes up.

(On whether USC will be nervous, since only Jarvis Turner has been to the NCAAs): 'They'll just have to play through it. Oklahoma State will be just as jittery. I'll take that. It's okay to be jittery. Then you settle into playing.

'Brandon Granville has taken over the leadership of this team.'

Senior guard Jeff Trepagnier:'Coming in as a freshman (in 1998), it was always something we talked about but as time went by, I wasn't sure if we were going to make it. Now that we're in, we're not just going to be satisfied with making it. We want to make a splash.'

Fifth-year senior forward Jarvis Turner (the only Trojan on the team who has been to an NCAA Tournament):'I was kind of confident we'd get a six or a seven seed going into today. What's surprising is that they put us in the same bracket as UCLA. Hopefully, we can try our best and have some success.

'As a freshman, we were on the bubble and were sweating it a bit. We were confident this year. My freshman year, we were a bit content just to get in. This year, we want to try and win a few. Do some damage.'
