Cal Baseball Defeats UC Santa Barbara, 6-4

BERKELEY, CA - The Cal baseball team broke a four-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over UC Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Bears improve to 11-9 on the season, while the Gauchos, who had won seven straight games before the loss, go to 10-5.
The Bears were down 4-3, but responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth on three straight RBI singles by senior right fielder Rob Meyer (drag bunt single), sophomore pinch hitter John Baker and freshman shortstop Jeff Dragicevich off of UCSB reliever Jeremy Sugerman (3.0 innings, three runs, no earned runs, one walk, one strikeout).
Cal freshman reliever Matt Brown earned his team-best third save of the season, pitching the top of the ninth (1.0 innings, one hit, no runs, no walks, one strikeout). The winning pitcher for the Bears was senior David Cash, who came in in the fifth and threw 4.0 innings with two hits, one earned run, two walks and two strikeouts to improve his record to 5-1. Cash now has a Cal career record of 18-5.
The Bears received a strong pitching effort from junior starter Jason Dennis, who went the first 4.0 innings with five hits, two runs, no walks and a season-high five strikeouts. The Gauchos scored a run in the top of the first on an RBI double by Dave Molidor, a run in the fourth on a lead-off home run by Tyler Von Schell, a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Bannon and a go ahead run in the seventh on an RBI single by Chad Peshke.
Cal scored its runs on an RBI single by freshman James Holder (first collegiate hit) in the fourth inning, an RBI double by freshman Brian Horwitz and a solo homer by senior Clint Hoover in the fifth inning and finally the three-run eighth inning. Horwitz's double extended his hitting streak to 15 games and Hoover's home run was the 32nd of his college career, which ties Lance Blankenship (1983-86) for fifth on the Cal all-time list.
The Bears will next host Sacramento State in a newly added game (to make up for rainouts), Tuesday, Mar. 13 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
