Cal to Play Fresno State in NCAA First Round Game
March 11, 2001
BERKELEY - California will play Fresno State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, meeting the Bulldogs Friday at the Pyramid in Memphis.
Game time and TV schedules will be announced Monday.
The Bears (20-10) are the eighth seed in the South Region, while Fresno State (25-6) is the ninth seed. The winner will likely face top-seeded and defending champion Michigan State, which plays No. 16 seed Alabama State in the first round.
Although Cal and Fresno State have not played this season, they have met in postseason play before. In 1999, the Bears defeated the Bulldogs, 79-71, in a first round NIT game played at the Oakland Arena. Sean Lampley had 28 points and 14 rebounds for Cal, which went on to capture the NIT championship.
Overall, Cal is making its 11th trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since 1997. Five years ago, the Bears, playing in the East Region as a No. 5 seed, beat Princeton and Villanova to advance to the Sweet 16 before falling to North Carolina. Cal has a 16-10 NCAA Tournament record, which includes a national title in 1959 and a runner-up finish in 1960.
