Quinney Wins Las Vegas Tournament
March 11, 2001
Georgia Tech shot a final-round 15-under par 273 to capture the team title by 24 strokes and Arizona State's Jeff Quinney fired his second straight 67 on Sunday to win medalist honors by seven shots at the Callaway Golf Las Vegas Intercollegiate.
Both Quinney and the Yellow Jackets jumped out to early leads at Rio Secco Golf Course and led throughout the tournament. Tech, after leading all schools with a four-over-par score in the first round, improved its play as the weather improved and recorded the lowest team score for each round. Three Yellow Jackets finished in the top six, led by Troy Matteson, who carded the tournament's low round of 66 on Sunday to capture second place.
Matteson's efforts weren't enough to knock off Quinney, however, as the Sun Devils' senior shot 69-67-67 to finish 13-under par at 203.
