Stanford Slams Baseball For Series Sweep
March 11, 2001
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Andy Topham's grand slam in the bottom of the tenth inning Sunday gave the No. 10 Stanford Cardinal the 9-5 victory over the No. 4 USC Trojans and the series sweep in non-conference action.
Topham went 4-for-5 for the Cardinal (18-5) with a double, home run and six RBI. Stanford rallied from a 5-0 deficit in front of 2,973 at Sunken Diamond.
It was the first time since 1997 that Stanford has swept USC (12-8) in a three-game series since the 1997 season when the Cardinal swept both series at Sunken Diamond and Dedeaux Field. Stanford has won 16 of its last 18 games while USC has lost a season-high four straight games.
Jonny Ash led off the tenth by being hit by a Brian Bannister pitch and was replaced by pinch runner Tobin Swope. Carlos Quentin doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. The Trojans then shifted right fielder Josh Self between first and second, leaving only Brian Barre and Jon Brewster in the outfield. Scott Dragicevich grounded to second and Sam Fuld was walked intentionally before Topham hit his grand slam.
After losing by scores of 2-0 and 15-3, the Trojans answered the bell early in the game.
Stanford's Tim Cunningham retired the first seven USC batters, but first baseman Bill Peavey knocked a single to center in the third. Right fielder Abel Montanez while shortstop Seth Davidson was hit on an 0-2 pitch to load the bases. Barre singled up the middle, scoring Peavey and Montanez. Second baseman Anthony Lunetta walked to load the bases again for the Trojans. Josh Persell hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Davidson and advancing Barre to third. Barre would then score on a wild pitch for a four-run inning.
Lunetta hit a solo shot to left, his third of the season, in the fifth for a 5-0 Trojans' lead. But the Cardinal answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth and the sixth.
The Cardinal rallied with three runs in the eighth. With two outs, Quentin singled to center to knock Reyes out of the game. Dragicevich hit the first pitch off Bannister into right. Fuld walked to load the bases. Topham then hit a two-run single to center, scoring Quentin and Dragicevich, making it a 5-4 USC lead. Left field Brian Hall hit a ground ball to second and beat the throw by Lunetta, scoring Fuld. Topham, however, was thrown out trying to score on the play by Peavey at home to end the inning.
The Trojans will travel to UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday (March 13) for a 2 p.m. game before returning home for a makeup game on Wednesday (March 14) against San Diego at 5 p.m. USC will begin Pac-10 Conference play next weekend with a three-game series at Washington, beginning on Saturday (March 17) at 1 p.m. All games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
