TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State head women's basketball coach Charli Turner Thorne gave birth to her second son at 4:29 p.m. Sunday afternoon in a Valley hospital, a little less than an hour after the Sun Devils earned their first NCAA Tournament bid in nine years.
Liam Turner Thorne, the second child of Turner Thorne and husband Will Thorne, weighed 8 pounds and 5 ounces and measured 21 1/2 inches long. The couple's first child, Conor Troy Thorne, was born on Feb. 9, 1999.
Turner Thorne, who celebrated her 35th birthday Saturday, hopes to return to practice later this week as the Sun Devils prepare for their NCAA first-round game against LSU Friday night at 4 p.m. MST in West Lafayette, Ind. The fifth-year coach has coached full-time throughout her pregnancy.
Arizona State captured a share of its first ever Pac-10 Conference title this season, finishing in a three-way tie for first place with Stanford and Washington. With a 20-10 record this season, the Sun Devils have notched their most wins since 1991-92 and just the fifth 20-win season in school history. Turner Thorne has been named District 8 Russell Athletic/WBCA Coach of the Year and is one of eight finalists for the WBCA's National Coach of the Year award.
