Cougs Upset Aztecs

March 12, 2001

SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The No. 47 Cougars handed the No. 31 Aztecs of San Diego State University a 6-1 loss Monday in a dual hosted by the Aztecs in San Diego.

The Cougs grabbed two of the three doubles victories, as well as the doubles point, giving them a 1-0 lead going into singles competition.

The Cougars only doubles lose came as WSU's No. 38 ranked duo of team-captain Tamara Filipovic and junior Erica Perkins were upset by the Aztecs' No. 39 tandem of Silvia Tonier and Lindsey Hedberg 8-2 at the No. 1 doubles position.

The Cougars went on to take five of the six singles victories and the match.

The only singles defeat suffered by the Cougars was at the No. 4 position where Freshman Stacy McKenna's six match winning streak was broken as she lost 4-6, 6-1, 4-6 to the Aztecs' Katja Karrento.

'We are extremely happy,' head coach Cari Groce said. 'After coming down last year and losing to San Diego State, this was sweet revenge. We didn't play exceptionally good doubles, but we did manage to take the doubles point, which set our momentum for singles. It was obvious that this team wanted to win badly today. They supported each other and played well.'

The Cougars will return to action Wednesday, as they take on No. 57 San Diego University at 10 a.m. in San Diego.
