No. 27 Men's Tennis Gets Back-to-Back Wins
March 12, 2001
BERKELEY, CA - The No. 27-ranked men's team (5-3, 1-2 Pac-10) played two matches Saturday, March 10, and came away with near shutouts in both. The original matches between Santa Clara and Saint Marys College were scheduled to be played in February, however due to rain, the matches were postponed until this weekend.
Against the Santa Clara Broncos, Cal faltered only in one singles spot, while all other players for the Bears defeated their Bronco opponents in straight sets. No. 26-ranked sophomore John Paul Fruttero continued his leadership at the top spot for the Bears. Fruttero knocked off Matt Cox with ease, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, Cal's tandem of Scott Kintz and Adrian Barnes fell to the Broncos duo of Mike Brugemeister and Ryan Livesay, 8-6 at the No. 1 spot. The Bears grabbed the doubles point when the tandems of Fruttero/Robert Kowalczyk and Ben Miles/Balazs Veress won at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
Taking on the Saint Marys Gaels, the Bears opted not to play doubles and grabbed five of six singles points for the match. Cal lost the point at No. 5, yet the Gaels could not overpower the Bears at any other position. Scott Kintz played at No. 2, defeating Arturo Planell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, while sophomore Ben Miles grabbed a strong win at No. 6, defeating Arvind Stokes, 6-1, 6-0.
Cal will travel to Indian Wells, to take on Southern Methodist University, Saturday, March 17, at 9 a.m.
