Menafee, Cal. -
Oregon State women's golf team is tied for 11th after one round of the 54-hole Pioneer Bruin Classic at the Menafee Lakes Country Club. Play was suspended due to darkness in the second round of the two-day tournament.
The Beavers are officially tied with Long Beach State at 306, 15 shots back of the host No. 19 UCLA Bruins. Oregon State was one of several teams that did complete its second round, improving the opening 18 by three shots.
Freshman Laura Skinner highlighted the first round with a career best 2-over-par 74 score. The Boise, Idaho native is tied for 24th, six shots off the pace being set by Nevada's Angie Yoon. The Beavers also received a strong effort from Melania Furuta, who equaled her career low with a 75, and is tied for 33rd.
'I'm really proud of the way Laura and Melanie competed today,' Beaver head coach Rise' Lakowske said. 'They haven't played a lot of golf at this level, but they certainly showed they can compete with some of the better players in the nation.'
'I thought we hit the ball better today than we have all season,' Lakowske said. 'We also putted well, and stayed calm throughout the day. This was a very positive day for the team, hopefully we can carry this momentum into the final round.
Second round action will be completed early Tuesday, before final round action takes place.
