Pac-10 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week (3/13/01)

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - OREGON STATE sophomore first baseman Andy Jarvis has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and STANFORD sophomore right-hander Jeremy Guthrie has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for March 6-March 12, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Jarvis, from Renton, Wash., had a prolific week at the plate against rivals Washington and Washington State. He batted .478 (11-for-23), hit five home runs, two doubles and added eight runs scored and 13 RBI. Jarvis tied the Beavers' single-game record for home runs, knocking three balls out of the park against the Cougars.

Guthrie, from Ashland, Ore., earns his second consecutive Pitcher of the Week honor after recording his best performance of the season against then-No. 4 USC. Guthrie notched a complete game six-hit shutout for the victory in the Cardinal's first game against the Trojans this season. He struck out eight batters and lowered his season ERA to 0.94. He has given up just five earned runs in 48.0 innings pitched.

The Player of the Week honor is the first for Jarvis in his career, and the 44th selection all-time for OREGON STATE. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the second for Guthrie in his career, and the 56th selection all-time for STANFORD.

Also nominated for Player of the Week were Shelley Duncan, ARIZ, Jeremy West, ASU, Brian Horwitz, CAL, Andy Topham, STAN, Ben Francisco, UCLA and Jefferson Thiel, WASH. Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week were Sean Rierson, ARIZ, Andy Torres, ASU, Thad Johnson, OSU, Josh Karp, UCLA, Mark Prior, USC and Sean White, WASH.
