March 14, 2001
SANTA BARBARA, CA - The top-ranked and undefeated UCLA Bruins improved their win streak to 35 on Wednesday afternoon, with a 6-1 win at UC Santa Barbara. That win ties the UCLA record for season-opening victories, set by the 1999 NCAA Champion squad.
For the second consecutive start, Bruin senior Courtney Dale pitched five perfect innings, this time losing the perfect game on a leadoff single in the sixth, to give the Gauchos their first baserunner of the afternoon. Dale did earn the victory, her fourth on the season.
The Bruins scored twice in the top of the third inning, on RBI singles by Tairia Mims and Stacey Nuveman, and added three more runs in the top of the fifth. A sixth run scored in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Dale, her second sac fly of the game.
With Bruin senior Stephanie Swenson in the circle for the seventh inning, the Gauchos came back to record two more hits and one run, their only tally of the game
The Bruins will return to action on Saturday, March 24, with the Alumnae Game at Easton Stadium. UCLA will then open Pac-10 play on Friday, March 30, at Stanford, then traveling to Berkeley, CA, for two games against undefeated Cal on March 31 and April 1.
