Tennis Grabs Second Shutout, Fourth Win in a Row

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 10-ranked California women's tennis team (8-2, 4-2 Pac-10) grabbed its second consecutive shutout and its fourth win in a row after defeating the Purdue Boilermakers (3-9, 0-2 Big Ten), 7-0, at the Hellman Tennis Courts.
After capturing the doubles point by winning all three matches, Cal went on to defeat each Purdue opponent in straight sets, except at the No. 5 spot, where freshman Catherine Lynch came back from a 6-4 first set loss to Gretchen Haynor. Lynch went on to defeat Haynor in a third set tiebreaker, grabbing the final point for the Bears, 4-6, 7-5, 10-8.
Senior co-captain Anita Kurimay held down the No. 1 spot for the Bears, defeating Erika Quebe in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Since her return from leg surgery Kurimay is 5-0 in dual match play in singles competition. Sophomore Christina Fusano played at No. 2, knocking out Melissa Iqbal in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Cal will look to extend their winning streak to five when it hosts Texas, Friday, March 16 at the Hellman tennis courts at 1:30 p.m.
