March 15, 2001
FULLERTON, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Washington softball team scored two runs in the both second and fifth innings to defeat the University of Hawaii, 4-0 Thursday in day one action of the Kia Klassic at Cal State Fullerton. With the win, the Huskies moved to 18-7 overall, while the Rainbows fell to 19-9.
Washington scored the game's first two runs when freshman Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) singled to left field and senior Kim DePaul (Tomball, Texas) reached base on a throwing error by Rainbow pitcher Felicity Witt to open the top of the second inning. Oleson and DePaul then both came home following another Hawaii throwing error on a ground ball off the bat of UW senior Christie Rosenblad (Fillmore, Calif.).
The Huskies tallied two more runs in the fifth on a two-run RBI single by senior Kelly Hauxhurst (Westminster, Calif.), who launched a deep fly ball off the fence along the left-field foul line to score freshmen Robyn Waddle (Federal Way, Wash.) and Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.).
UW freshman pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) kept the Rainbows off the scoreboard, allowing just three hits, all in the third inning, to pick up her 16th win of the season to move to 16-2 overall. Bollinger struck out seven Hawaii batters, including five straight in the second and third innings, and retired the side in order in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings. Witt took the loss for the Rainbows to fall to 10-5 in 2001.
The Huskies play Texas later Thursday evening at 5 p.m., to finish day one action at the Kia Klassic. The UW will then finish out pool play Friday with a 9 a.m. game versus New Mexico State.
