Franza Named Second-Team Academic All-American

Stamford, CT - Washington senior women's basketball player Megan Franza has been named a a second-team selection to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America� Women's Basketball Team announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Franza, a native of Leavenworth, Wash., has a 3.79 grade point average (GPA) as a psychology major at the University. This season Franza led Washington in scoring with a 16.4 average and earned first-team All-Pac-10 Conference honors for the second consecutive year after helping the Huskies to a share of the league championship. Franza and the Huskies meet Old Dominion in Gainesville, Fla., in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Friday.

Ruth Riley of Notre Dame, Jackie Stiles of Southwest Missouri St. and Katie Douglas of Purdue, all of whom were named to the Associated Press first team All-America Team, were among the student-athletes chosen to the first team. Riley, a senior center, who earlier this week was named the Naismith Award winner as Player of the Year for women's basketball, has a 3.64 Grade Point Average (GPA) as a psychology major and was named the University Division's Team Member of the Year.

The Verizon Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member CoSIDA. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon the national level.
