March 16, 2001
FULLERTON, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Washington softball team used a pair of two-out RBI singles by freshman Courtney Jeffries (Eugene, Ore.) and senior Christie Rosenblad (Fillmore, Calif.) to defeat New Mexico State, 2-0, Friday in day two action of the Kia Klassic at Cal State Fullerton. The Huskies moved to 19-9 on the season and 2-1 in tournament play, while the Aggies fell to 11-26 overall and finished winless in the three pool games.
With the score tied at 0-0 through the first three and a half innings, Jeffries hit a two-out, full-count single to left field to score freshman Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) from second base. Rosenblad then followed Jeffries in the bottom of the fifth, belting a bases-loaded single to left field to score freshman Shawna Norris (Littleton, Colo.), who led-off the inning with an infield single.
UW pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) allowed just one hit in the first and second innings, while retiring the side in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Bollinger struck out six Aggie batters to earn her seventh consecutive victory, moving to 17-2 overall, and recorded her fourth consecutive complete-game shutout in as many starts.
Washington, contingent on a win by Texas over Hawaii later Friday afternoon, will face Utah State, which finished third in its pool, at 9 a.m. Saturday morning in the first game of bracket play. The Huskies could also face #14 Notre Dame, which placed second in its pool, at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
