Cal-Fresno State Postgame Quotes

March 16, 2001

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Shantay Legens, Sophomore, Guard, University of California

on the game he played and how he matched up against Ely

'I think he had a great game. As for myself, I struggled. I don't think that my performance tonight helped our team. I think that was the tale of us tonight... `oops...' '

Why weren't you able to keep the aggression you had early in the game?

'They were double teaming us and picking up my dribble. I wasn't making the right passes. I wasn't setting up the offense right. '

Sean Lampley, Senior, Forward, University of California

What was the difference in the pressure that Fresno State did in the game tonight verses teams like Arizona?

'I don't think that the post players, especially me, helped Shantay out at all. Fresno State has a pressure similar to Arizona State and the coaches did a great job preparing us for it but we just weren't able to handle it. We got away from in the beginning of the game. I think that's why Shantay struggled. He got trapped. Me and the other post players should have stepped up and helped.'

As the clock ticked down you stood there and looked at Fresno State celebrating at the other end of the court. What was going through your mind since this was the end of your dream of making a run in the NCAA tournament as well as the end of your college career?

'This is not how I wanted to end my career. I don't think I put my best effort out and I think that cost us the game. There's nothing I can do and I think that's going to haunt me for a little while especially with me being the leader of this team. There were all of these guys looking up to me and I didn't come out to play. I'm not taking anything away from them, they played a great game but I think if I had played a little bit better maybe we could have had a different outcome.'

Head Coach Ben Braun

'I thought that Fresno played well defensively. I think they played solid and did a great job maintaining their pressure. I think that was the big story of the game. Our turnovers really hurt us. That was the big difference in the game.'

Did you think your zone was effective?

'I think that it was effective. They made some baskets. It caused them to make a few extra baskets and we did create some turnovers off them.'

Talk about your defensive intensity?

'Dennis (Gates) played great on defense tonight. I told the team that I wished they could match his intensity on defense. That will be a sign of our team taking that next step. We want our team to play on that level on defense.'

Can you point to something that made your team tentative?

'Their defense added to our frustration. They forced us into mistakes. It was their aggressiveness that took away our aggressiveness. They scored off our tunovers and that was a difference in the game. Our players will learn from that and it will help us in the future.'
