Ducks Hire Hawkins as Director of Football Operations
March 16, 2001
EUGENE -- Jeffrey Hawkins has been hired as Oregon's director of football operations, coach Mike Bellotti announced Friday. Hawkins replaces Mike McHugh, who left to take a position with the Detroit Lions last month.
Hawkins, 49, served in a similar position under Bellotti at Chico State from 1985-87. He also had stints as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Dartmouth (1987-92) and Tulane (1992-94).
'I'm very excited to have the opportunity to bring Jeffrey Hawkins back to my staff,' Bellotti said. 'He was my director of football operations at Chico State and got extensive experience at Dartmouth and Tulane. He brings a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm to the position and we're very fortunate to be able to hire someone with his expertise.'
Originally from Kingston, Mass., Hawkins spent four years in the Army following his 1972 graduation from Silver Lake Regional High School. After completing his tour and receiving an honorable discharge, Hawkins attended American River College in Sacramento, Calif., earning an A.A. degree in 1985. He returned to New England to continue his undergraduate career and earned a degree in physical education from Bridgewater State in 1989.
Hawkins spent four years in various roles with the New England Patriots before joining Bellotti at Chico State. He got away from football while at Tulane and spent two years as the Green Wave's director of marketing and promotions from 1994-96. He has spent the last four years as vice president for external affairs of the Special Olympics Louisiana in New Orleans.
He has also kept busy with other projects in New Orleans during the past four years, including game-day assignments with the New Orleans Saints, special projects for the Nokia Sugar Bowl and acting as an assistant director for the Manning Passing Academy. Hawkins has also had a 20-year commitment as a volunteer for the Special Olympics in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Louisiana.
