March 17, 2001
FULLERTON, Calif. - - Washington senior Kim DePaul (Tomball, Texas) scored the game-winning run in the first inning as the 12th-ranked Husky softball team held on to defeat Utah State, 1-0, Saturday in day three action of the Kia Klassic at Cal State Fullerton. With the win, the Huskies moved to 20-8 overall, while the Aggies fell to 4-15.
The UW scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first inning when DePaul walked with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Freshman Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) then beat out the throw on a ground ball single to second base to drive in DePaul.
Washington's Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched her fifth consecutive complete-game shutout in as many starts, yielding just two hits and striking out four to improve to 18-2 overall. Bollinger, who has not given up a run in her last 26 consecutive innings, allowed just three Utah State base-runners to reach second base, while none advanced to third.
Utah State pitcher Kristin Hommel struck out 11 Husky batters after giving up just the one earned run in the first inning. Hommel fell to 0-7 on the season, despite giving up just two hits.
Washington, which is 3-1 in tournament play, will face host Cal State Fullerton at 5 p.m. Saturday evening. The winner of that game will then play in the Kia Klassic semifinals Sunday at 11 a.m.
