Cal Baseball Loses Heartbreaker to Arizona State, 4-2
March 17, 2001
BERKELEY, CA - Arizona State scored three runs with two outs in the top of the ninth, including a bad hop two-run single by pinch hitter Nick Walsh, to defeat Cal, 4-2, Saturday at Evans Diamond. The Bears fall to 13-11 (0-2) on the season, while the Sun Devils improved to 19-4-1 (2-0).
Arizona State was down to its final out of the game against Cal freshman reliever Matt Brown (1-3, 3.0 innings, four hits, three runs, two walks, three strikeouts) when things broke down for the Bears. Brown had started the inning giving up a lead-off single to Brooks Conrad, but was able to pick off Conrad at first. Brown then got pinch hitter Jonah Martin to ground out to third.
ASU stayed alive when Brown hit Mike Lopez with a pitch. Steve Garrabrants followed with a single to left, Chris Duffy had another single to left to tie the game, 2-2 and then Walsh had his game-winning RBI when the ball he hit took a bad hop over the head of Cal first baseman Clint Hoover.
Sun Devil reliever Franco Pezely earned the win, pitching the final two innings (two hits, no runs, no walks, one strikeout). Both ASU's starting pitcher Mike Esposito (7.0 innings, four hits, two runs, no walks, six strikeouts) and Bear starter Ryan Atkinson (5.0 innings, two hits, one run, four walks, four strikeouts) threw well. Cal got on the board first on a solo home run by junior second baseman Carson White. ASU tied the game, 1-1, in the sixth when a run scored when Casey Myers hit into a bases loaded double play.
The Bears were able to take a 2-1 lead in the seventh on an RBI single by freshman third baseman Conor Jackson, scoring freshman Brian Horwitz, who had led off the inning with a single to left. Horwitz extended his hitting streak to 19 games and has now gotten a hit in 22 of the 23 games he's played in this season. Both Horwitz and freshman shortstop Jeff Dragicevich had two hits for Cal. Chris Duffy led ASU with two hits.
The Bears will next host No. 4 ranked Arizona State in the third game of the three-game Pac-10 series, Sunday, Mar. 18 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond. ASU won game one Friday, 7-4.
