SACRAMENTO, CA - The No. 3 California Golden Bears met the No. 13 Iowa Hawkeyes for the third time in two weeks on Saturday afternoon in the second round at the Capital Classic Tournament. The Bears took the first two games, 3-0 and 1-0, respectively, at the NIST tournament in San Jose last weekend, but fell just short to the Hawkeyes in game three, losing 1-0, in eight innings. The loss gives Cal its first blemish on the season, dropping to 32-1, in addition to eliminating them from the Classic, while Iowa improves to 18-6 on the year to advance to the championship game.
The Bears had runners in scoring position on two occasions during regulation, once in the second with sophomore Veronica Nelson on second with one out, and again in the third with the bases loaded and two outs, but Cal failed to score a run in either inning.
The game went to the eighth, but again, Cal missed an opportunity with another runner on second and no outs this time, but went down in order to end the inning.
Iowa came up in the eighth and placed a runner on second. With one out, the Hawkeyes moved the runner to third, bringing Hawkeye Christina Schmaltz to the plate, who instantly sent a base hit to left field, scoring Erin Doud from third and giving Iowa the 1-0 win.
Junior Jocelyn Forest went the distance for the Bears, allowing two hits and striking out five, while walking two and allowing an unearned run. With the loss, she falls to 17-1on the year.
Iowa's Kristi Hanks pitched the final inning in relief to earn the win, improving to 13-3.
The Bears return to action next weekend when they travel to Georgia to compete in the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic.
