Tenth-Ranked ASU Women's Tennis Topples Trojans of USC, 6-1

TEMPE, Ariz. - The tenth-ranked Arizona State (12-3, 5-3) women's tennis team closed out this weekend with a 6-1 victory over No. 12 USC (12-4, 2-2) on Saturday at the Whiteman Tennis Center, extending their untarnished home winning streak to ten matches.

In doubles play, ASU earned its team point by winning two of the three needed matches. No. 28-ranked Adria Engel/Karin Palme tandem improved to 11-4 in dual play by defeating USC's No. 32 combo Melissa Esmero and Anita Loyola, 8-6, on the No. 2 court. On the No. 3 court, ASU's Cindy Sureephong/Megan Yeats combo improved to 14-1 in dual action as they defeated the Trojans' Maureen Diaz and Bernadette Bayani, 8-5. ASU's Celena McCoury and Mhairi Brown faced USC's No. 36 pair of Jewel Peterson and Tiffany Brymer, but fell to the Trojans on the No. 1 court, 8-5.

In singles action, ASU failed to drop a set in four of its six matches. No. 12 ASU sophomore Adria Engel defeated No. 20 USC sophomore Jewel Peterson on the No. 1 court, 6-4, 6-4, and ASU's Karin Palme did away with the Trojans' Anita Loyola, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0, on the No. 2 court. On courts No. 3, 4, and 5, ASU's Faye DeVera, Mhairi Brown, and Cindy Sureephong, who have compiled a combined 38-6 dual record on their respective courts, all defeated their Trojan opponents without dropping a set.

The Devils will next face No. 34 University of Tulsa in Tempe on Sunday, April 1, at the Whiteman Tennis Center at 12:00 p.m. (MST).
