Ninth-seeded Fresno State beat No. 8 California 82-70 in the first round of the South Regional. The win improved Tarkanian's career record in the first round to 17-1, but this was his first at Fresno State. Shantay Legans had 15 points to lead the Bears, while Pac-10 player of the year Sean Lampley had 13, six below his average.
Arizona 101, Eastern Illinois 76 (NCAA)
The No. 15 seed didn't pull an upset this time. Not even close. Gilbert Arenas scored 21 points and second-seeded Arizona used its power and speed to coast past Eastern Illinois 101-76 Friday in the opening round of the Midwest Regional. Michael Wright and Loren Woods added 17 points each for the Wildcats (24-7).
LSU 83, Arizona St. 66 (NCAA)
Ke-Ke Tardy scored 21 points, and MarieFerdinand added 19 in Louisiana State's first-round win. The sixth-seeded Lady Tigers (20-10) trailed early against the No. 11 Sun Devils before going on a 17-8 run that gave them a lead they would notrelinquish. Arizona State (20-11) got 25 points from Melody Johnson.
Washington 67, Old Dominion 65 (NCAA)
Loree Payne got Washington's tournament off to a magical start, hitting a 15-foot jump shot at the buzzer to lift the Huskies past Old Dominion in the first round. Payne finished with 20 points for the sixth-seeded Huskies (20-9), who will play Florida in the second round Sunday.
BYU 78, Oregon State 63 (WNIT)
Oregon State University's women's basketball season came to an end Friday with a 78-63 loss to Brigham Young University in the opening round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament.
