Cal Baseball Pounds No. 4 Arizona State, 17-5

BERKELEY, CA - Led by the hitting of John Baker, Jeff Dragicevich and Carson White, the Cal baseball team scored a season-high 17 runs in a 17-5 victory over Arizona State Sunday at Evans Diamond. The Bears improved to 14-11 (1-2) on the season, while the Sun Devils go to 19-5-1 (2-1). ASU won the Friday game of the series 7-4, and captured Saturday's game, 4-2.
Cal scored five runs in the second inning, three runs in the third and seven runs in the fourth in the fourth inning. The Bears then added single runs in the sixth and the seventh innings. Baker finished the day 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and a career-high six RBI. He had a two-run homer in the second inning, a three-run double in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth. Dragicevich had a three-run homer in the third inning and an RBI single in the fourth. White had a double in the second inning and a two-run homer in the fourth inning. White had hit a homer against the Sun Devils in Saturday's 4-2 loss.
Bear freshman Brian Horwitz extended his hitting streak to 20 games by going 2-for-5 with an RBI double in the fourth inning. Horwitz has now gotten a hit in 23 of the 24 games he's played in this season. Sophomore outfielder Ben Conley was 2-for-5 with an RBI and freshman catcher Spencer Wyman had a two-run double for Cal in the second inning.
The winning pitcher for the Bears was senior reliever David Cash, who improved his record to 6-1, throwing 3.3 innings with one hit, no runs, two walks and five strikeouts. Cash replaced starter Jason Dennis (4.7 innings, nine hits, four earned runs, four walks, three strikeouts) with two outs in the top of the fifth. Cash now has a career record of 19-5 with four saves at Cal.
The losing pitcher for Arizona State was starter Andy Torres (7-2, 1.7 innings, six hits, five runs, no walks, two strikeouts), who had led the nation with seven wins prior to the game. The Sun Devils threw six different pitchers against the Bears.
Cal will next host Washington State in a three-game Pac-10 series, beginning Friday, Mar. 23 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
