Men's Golf Heads to Stevinson Ranch

March 19, 2001

BERKELEY - Cal returns to the links after taking a week off following a disappointing showing at the Cleveland Golf Classic, where the Bears finished 12th. This week, Cal Coach Steve Desimone said that the team is playing with confidence and is ready to play the challenging Stevinson Ranch course (7,060 yards, Par 72) on March 26-27.

Cal will get a chance to see some different golf programs in action. In addition to Cal and host Colorado, Desimone said that Pacific, Kansas, Missouri and Tulsa are strong teams that the Bears will keep a close eye on throughout the tournament. Overall, 14 teams will compete.

Desimone has selected the following five players to represent Cal at the Stevinson Ranch Invitational:

PLAYER YR	SPRING RDS	AVG	TOP FINISH1. Walter Chun Jr.	8 73.5	tie-9th2. Jesse Ruda So.	8 73.1	tie-27th3. Dong Yi Sr.	8 73.8	tie-9th4. Peter Tomasulo	Fr.	8 73.5	tie-5th5. To be determined*

*Coach Desimone hasn't decided if James Hahn, Lance Torrey or Xabi Laduche will fill the team's fifth slot.

Cal finished a disappointing 12th out of 15 teams at the Cleveland Golf Classic at USC on March 5-6. The course, Coach Desimone said, was not suited to the Bears style of play. The longer, more difficult Stevinson Ranch course Cal competes on this week should produce a better team finish.

Teams played only two of the scheduled three rounds at the Cleveland Golf Classic. Rain and wind canceled the final round. Cal finished with a 36-hole score of 609 (305-304). Individually, Walter Chun tied for ninth place with a two-round score of 147 (72-75, +5). J.R. Ruda, meanwhile, posted a score of 150 (76-74, +8), good enough to tie for 27th. Rounding out Cal's scores: Dong Yi tied for 54th place with a 155 (76-79, +13), James Hahn tied for 72nd with a 160 (84-76, +18) and Peter Tomasulo shot a 161 (81-80, +19), tying him for 75th place.

Cal Coach Desimone said that the top four spots in the Bears lineup are nearly solidified. Other than juggling the order, Desimone has played his top four golfers (Chun, Ruda, Yi and Tomasulo) in each tournament this season. The fifth spot, however, changes from week to week and with junior Xabi Laduche back from the injured list Desimone has several weapons from which to choose.
