USC Signs Three More Football Players To Letters Of Intent

Three more football players: prep All-American linebacker Marvin Simmons (Poly High in Long Beach, Calif.), All-Hawaii tight end Kolomona Kapanui (The Kamehameha Schools, Honolulu, Hi.) and linebacker-snapper Matt Hayward (Glendale Community College, Glendale, Ariz.) have signed letters of intent with USC, new head coach Pete Carroll announced today.

Simmons and Kapanui will enter Troy in the fall as freshmen, while Hayward will be a sophomore. This trio joins 14 recruits who previously signed letters of intent with USC in early February.

He earned Honolulu Star-Bulletin All-State first team and All-Interscholastic League of Honolulu honorable mention honors as a senior in 2000 at The Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu...Primarily a blocker, he caught 8 passes in 2000, with 3 going for touchdowns...He also starred in basketball, earning Honolulu Star-Bulletin All-State honorable mention and All-ILH second team honors...His cousin, Chad Kapanui, plays football at Hawaii.

He won 2000 Parade All-American, Prep Star All-American, Student Sports Senior All-American, Prep Star Dream Team, Student Sports Top 100, Super Prep All-Farwest, Prep Star All-Western Region Super 30, Long Beach Press-Telegram Best in the West first team, Las Vegas Sun Super 11, Cal-Hi Sports All-State first team, Tacoma News Tribune Western 100, All-CIF Southern Section first team, All-CIF Division I, Los Angeles Times All-South Coast/Southeast and Long Beach Press-Telegram Dream Team first team honors as a senior at Poly High in Long Beach (Calif.)...He made almost 200 tackles, along with 45 tackles for losses, 15 sacks, 20 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions, 4 blocked punts and 4 blocked PATs in 2000...Poly went 14-0 and won the CIF Division I championship...He spent his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons at Dominguez High in Compton (Calif.)...Current Trojans DeShaun Hill, Kareem Kelly, Mike Pollard and Darrell Rideaux also prepped at Poly, as did incoming USC recruit Raymond Tago...As a 1999 junior at Dominguez, he made All-CIF Division II, Los Angeles Times All-South Coast/Southeast, Long Beach Press-Telegram Dream Team first team and All-League MVP while notching 156 tackles, 74 tackles for losses, 14 sacks and 3 interceptions on offense and running for 900 yards with 19 TDs and catching 28 passes for 400 yards (14.3 avg.) with 4 TDs on offense...In 1998 as a sophomore, he was named to a Student Sports Sophomore All-American and Long Beach Press-Telegram Dream Team third team.

MATT HAYWARD: 6-2, 225
He was a linebacker and snapper as a freshman in 2000 at Glendale (Ariz.) Community College...Glendale won the 2000 National Junior College Athletic Association national championship...He was a 3-year (1997-99) starting linebacker and offensive guard at Mountain Ridge High in Glendale, earning All-Conference honors in 1998 and 1999.
