Cal Knocks Off Undefeated SMU, 4-3
March 17, 2001
INDIAN WELLS, CA - The No. 27-ranked men's tennis team (6-3, 1-2 Pac-10) came home from Indian Wells, CA, with a win and an upset of No. 8-ranked Southern Methodist University. SMU (10-1) had gone undefeated until matching up with the Bears this weekend.
Cal started off the competition by winning the doubles point behind strong performances by the tandems of John Paul Fruttero/Robert Kowalczyk, who won 9-7 at No. 2, and Ben Miles/Balazs Veress, who won 9-8(6) at No. 3. The point in doubles would prove the deciding factor in the win for the Bears.
In singles, players went head to head as only three Cal players walked away with victories. Cal falterd at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots where Fruttero and Veress could not get by SMU's Jon Wallmark and the top-ranked player heading into the preseason, Genius Chidzikwe. Senior Adrian Barnes played a tough three set match, as Barnes outlasted Krystian Pfeiffer, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Robert Kowalczyk, who struggled with injuries, overpowered Lukasz Senczyszyn, winning in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. Scott Kintz sealed the victory for the Bears, defeating Alexix Rudzinski, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The Bears hope to extend their four match winning streak when they host Kansas, March 21, at the Hellman Tennis Courts at 1:30 p.m.
