Pac-10 Baseball Player/Pitcher of the Week (3/20/01)

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA senior first baseman Ernie Durazo has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and USC junior right-hander Mark Prior has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for March 13-March 19, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Durazo, from Tucson, Ariz., hit .667 (10-for-15) with a triple, two home runs, nine runs scored and nine RBI in the Wildcats' sweep of Southern Utah and midweek loss to Houston. At one point, Durazo strung together six consecutive hits. In the first game against the Thunderbirds he went 5-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. His efforts at the plate marked the first five-hit game of the season for Arizona.
Prior, from Bonita, Calif., pitched a complete game and threw USC's 20th two-hitter since 1976. Prior struck out a career-high 14 batters and did not allow a walk. He did not allow an earned run in the 5-1 victory and gave up only two hits. In 50.2 innings pitched this season, Prior is 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA, 80 strikeouts and six walks.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Durazo in his career, and the 34th selection all-time for ARIZONA. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first for Prior in his career, and the 43rd selection all-time for USC.
Also nominated for Player of the Week were Rod Allen, ASU, Brian Horwitz, CAL, Brian Barden, OSU, Brandon Jacobson, WASH. Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week were Mike Esposito, ASU, Scott Nicholson, OSU.
