2001 Team Notes
ARIZONA (19-12, 2-1): The Wildcats went on an offensive tear last week, sweeping Southern Utah by scores of 13-5, 7-2 and 13-7. Arizona did however drop a midweek game to Houston, 9-3 ... Arizona outscored its opponents 36-23 and compiled 45 hits in the four games ... The 'Cats are batting .302 as a team, opposed to the .283 average of their opponents ... Senior 1B Ernie Durazo was a tough out at the plate as he batted .667 (10-for-15) on the week. He also added a triple, two home runs, nine runs scored and nine RBI. At one point he pounded out six consecutive hits and went 5-for-5 in the first game against the Thunderbirds. He was rewarded with his first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for his efforts ... Durazo paces Arizona in hitting (.388), runs (31), RBI (39), slugging percentage (.628) and on-base percentage (.470) ... Freshman RHP Tony Sulser picked up his first career save. He stands at 2-1 on the season with a 3.91 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched ... Arizona hosts USC this weekend. It marks the second Conference series of play for both teams.
ARIZONA STATE (19-5-1, 2-1): History repeated itself as ASU again took two of three games at Evans Diamond from the Golden Bears to open up Pac-10 play ... The Sun Devils notched a come-from-behind 4-2 victory in the second game of the series. The win marked the second time ASU has recorded a win in its last at-bat. With two outs in the ninth, freshman Nick Walsh came up in the clutch with a pinch-hit two-run single ... Junior 2B Brooks Conrad did well against the Bears hitting .417 (5-for-12) with one run scored, two RBI, two doubles and two stolen bases ... Senior LHP Drew Friedberg continues to dominate out of the pen. He threw four scoreless innings against Cal while striking out four. He stands at 3-0 on the season with a 0.83 ERA ... Freshman LF/DH Rod Allen and Junior OF Chris Duffy continued their streaky ways. Allen is riding a 17-game hitting streak, while Duffy's is at 15 games ... Senior C Casey Myers is only two RBI away from moving into second place on ASU's all-time career RBI leaderboard. He currently has 248. Clay Westlake (1973-76) holds the No. 2 spot with 250 ... The Sun Devils head north to take on Oregon State this week.
CALIFORNIA (14-11, 1-2): Cal struggled in its first two games against Arizona State. Despite holding the lead three different times the Bears dropped the first game, 7-4. The next game they were one away from a win, but couldn't hold on and lost, 4-2. However, Cal responded to the first two losses with a resounding 17-5 victory over the Sun Devils in the final game of the series ... In that game, sophomore DH John Baker led the Bears going 4-for-5 with a double, home run and career-high six RBI ... Freshman OF Brian Horwitz extended his hitting streak to 20 games on the weekend. He now has hit safely in 23 of the 24 games he's played in this season ... Cal also received a strong pitching performance against ASU from senior RHP David Cash. Cash earned the win over the Sun Devils after striking out five batters, giving up only one hit and not allowing any runs ... Freshman RHP Brian Montalbo also pitched well in a midweek game against Sacramento State. Montalbo got the win after notching seven strikeouts, while scattering four hits and allowing no earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched ... Next up for the Bears is a Conference series at home against Washington State.
OREGON STATE (16-9, 0-0): After sweeping a three-game series with Minnesota and two-game midweek series with Gonzaga, the Beavers' five-game winning streak is their longest since they took seven straight early last spring ... Oregon State has won eight of its last nine games and has moved to seven games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 1998 season ... With scores of 10-9 over Gonzaga and 6-5 over Minnesota, Oregon State is 7-3 in one-run ballgames ... The Beavers' games with Minnesota marked the first-ever visit by a Big Ten team to OSU's ballpark in its 95-year history ... Junior RF Josh Carter had his hitting streak halted at 26 games after going 0-for-4 with one RBI and a walk in Oregon State's second game with Gonzaga ... Sophomore 3B Brian Barden, on the other hand, is riding a 13-game hitting streak. Last week he hit .474 (9-for-19) with two doubles, four runs scored and five RBI ... Pitcher Stephen Copeland notched his fifth save of the season against Minnesota, tying him for second on Oregon State's all-time single-season list with Jim Grove (1982) ... Another OSU southpaw that had a good outing was senior Scott Nicholson. Nicholson threw a complete- game, four-hitter, striking out eight and walking only two in recording the Beavers' first complete-game shutout in over two years ... Oregon State hosts Arizona State this weekend to kick off its Conference season.
STANFORD (18-5, 0-0): The Cardinal was idle last week ... Stanford continues to be top the Baseball America poll and is No. 2 in the Collegiate Baseball and Baseball Weekly polls ... Stanford hosts Washington this weekend for its first Pac-10 games ... The team will be well-rested for the Huskies as they have been on an 11-
day break ... The Cardinal holds a 25-9 record over Washington. They swept a three-game series against the Huskies last year at Sunken Diamond ... Stanford has won 13 consecutive regular season series and six straight Pac-10 regular season series dating back to last season ... The Cardinal is 10-1 at Sunken Diamond and has won 16 of its last 18 games, including four in a row ... The Cardinal pitching staff boasts an ERA of 2.87. Sophomore RHP Jeremy Guthrie owns a 5-0 record and 0.94 ERA ... The team is hitting at a .281 clip. Junior 2B Chris O'Riordan is batting .351 with a team-high 33 hits and 28 RBI.
UCLA (15-7, 1-2): The Bruins won two midweek games against Cal State Northridge, 12-7 and Purdue, 10-6 ... Against the Matadors, UCLA opened up the game with an eight-run second inning. Junior C Josh Arhart went 3-for-3, with three runs scored and three RBI. He hit his first UCLA home run in the eighth inning ...Senior DH Brian Baron saw his 21-game hitting streak come to an end against Cal State Northridge ... UCLA had another offensive game against the Boilermakers, as every Bruin in the lineup got a hit. Junior LF Adam Berry led the Bruins going 3-for-5 with one run and 3 RBI. He needed only a single to hit for the cycle ... It's finals week for UCLA. The Bruins will play Cal State Los Angeles on Mar. 25 and Cal State Northridge on Mar. 26.
USC (15-10, 2-1): USC is coming off a 1-2 weekend at Washington ... The Huskies double-header sweep of the Trojans marked the first time Washington has ever taken a series from USC ... While the Trojans did score 10 runs to Washington's 14 in the final two games, they only won the first game 5-1. In the victory, junior RHP Mark Prior was nearly perfect, pitching a complete-game two-hitter. He struck out a career-high 14 batters and allowed no walks or earned runs. In 50.2 innings pitched this season, Prior is 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA. He has 80 strikeouts and only six walks and has struck out 49 batters in his last four starts ... USC picked up two midweek wins prior to the Washington series. The Trojans defeated UC Santa Barbara 12-5 and San Diego 4-3. USC won the game against the Toreros after junior CF Brian Barre stole home in the bottom of the ninth ... Junior DH Bill Peavey had a prolific week at the plate. He hit .389 (7-for-18) with four runs scored, six RBI and three home runs ... The Trojans will look to rebound this weekend taking on Pepperdine in a midweek game before traveling to Arizona to play the Wildcats.
WASHINGTON (11-4, 2-1): The Huskies are coming off a double-header sweep of USC. Washington had previously only beaten USC twice in 24 all-time games ... The double-header was scheduled due to a rain out. The Huskies will now spend Spring Break playing seven games in seven days ... Sophomore OF Brandon Jacobson had a good weekend at the plate against the Trojans. He batted .500 (5-for-10) with six runs, one RBI, one home run and a stolen base. Jacobson scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning in Game One of the double-header ... The Huskies have a midweek two-game non-conference series with Washington State before facing Stanford. Washington won all five of its games against the Cougars last year ... Husky starter and captain Marc Rittenhouse will be out four to six weeks after undergoing surgery on his left thumb. Rittenhouse suffered damage to the ligament before the beginning of the season and tried to play though the injury, but was told the damage could be permanent if not repaired.
WASHINGTON STATE (8-14, 0-0): The Cougars went 2-1 last week against Oral Roberts ... Washington State dropped the first game, 4-1, despite getting six solid innings from starting pitcher Zach Fisher. The junior RHP struck out four batters and allowed only one earned run on five hits ... Strong Cougar pitching continued in the next game as junior LHP Tony Banaszak tossed a complete-game four-hitter. He struck out three hitters and allowed three runs on four hits ... Offensively, Washington State was led by junior IF Bookie Gates who had four hits, three runs and six RBI. He also added a double and was hit by pitch twice ... The Cougars claimed a 14-9 victory over Oral Roberts to finish off the series. The double-digit run mark was their biggest offensive output of the season ... Washington State plays two non-conference games against Washington before opening up Pac-10 play at California.
