March 21, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford sophomore right-handed pitcher Jeremy Guthrie will make a special visit to the GoStanford.com / ESPN.com chat room this Thursday at 12:00 p.m. PT. Guthrie will chat with fans about the top-ranked Stanford Baseball team that has started the season with an 18-5 record and returns to action this Friday-Sunday (March 23-25) against Washington to open its 2001 Pac-10 schedule. The Cardinal has won a school-record four straight Pac-10 titles (includes Southern Division and co-championships).
Stanford, which has now been the nation's No. 1 team for two weeks, jumped from No. 10 to No. 1 in the Baseball America poll on March 12 after sweeping USC for the first time since 1997 the previous weekend. Stanford has won 16 of its last 18 games.
Guthrie has been the Cardinal's pitching ace over the first two months of the season, recording a 5-0 record and an 0.94 ERA. He has given up just five earned runs the entire year in 48.0 innings, while leading the team with 45 strikeouts. Guthrie is the leader of Stanford's regular rotation that also includes Tim Cunningham (4-0, 2.45) and Jeff Bruksch (4-0, 3.12). The trio is a combined 13-0 with a 2.18 ERA this season.
Guthrie earned back-to-back Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors on March 6 and 13. He tossed his first career complete-game shutout in his most recent start against USC on March 9, scattering six hits and striking out eight in a 2-0 Stanford win. Guthrie also earned NCBWA Pitcher of the Week honors on February 13 after holding Florida State scoreless on only one hit over the first 7.0 innings of a 6-2 Stanford win.
Guthrie returned from a two-year Mormon mission in Spain last August and did not touch a baseball during the entire mission.
While Guthrie will not be stopping by until Thursday at 12:00 p.m. PT, but feel free to leave your questions now and we will save them for his arrival.
