November 12, 2001

As the Fall season has progressed, Stanford Crew has continued to seek out challenges. The NARF regatta served as a springboard for the Varsity Men to continue theirprogress. It was a step of distinction against top collegiate crews, includingthe #1 ranked University of California Golden Bears. Stanford entered the regattaa more cohesive team, as evidenced by their travel to the Southern Californiaregion. Unfortunately, the Varsity squad was missing key oarsman Chris Jones, who was waylaid by illness. Varsity oarsmen Bryant Helvey remarked, 'Thetrip was a chance for novices and varsity athletes to come together and placeourselves in race mode against top competition.'

The racing on Sunday morning proved adventurous in the busy Newport Harbor, asthe Varsity and Novice boats gained experience. A second place finish for theVarsity was achieved. The Cardinal will next face distinguished competition inthe spring at the San Diego Crew Classic.
