March 21, 2001

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 30-ranked men's tennis team (7-3, 1-2 Pac-10) downed an extremely competitive Kansas Jayhawk team (9-6, 0-1 Big 12) at the Hellman Tennis Courts, winning all three doubles matches and taking five of six in singles for the 6-1 victory.

The Bears took their first sweep in doubles all season when the three teams took their matches, and the doubles point for Cal. The Bears, which had not yet seen a victory at the No. 1 spot all year rallied behind the aggressive play of seniors Adrian Barnes and Scott Kintz, who teamed to knock out Kansas' tandem of Quentin Blakeney and Pete Stroer, 8-6. Cal's duo of John Paul Fruttero and Robert Kowalczyk remain undefeated at the No. 2 spot (3-0) after they defeated the Jayhawk's Alex Barragan and Rodrigo Echagaray, 8-6. Sophomore Ben Miles teamed with freshman Balazs Veress for a 9-8 victory at No. 3, also remaining undefeated at the spot (4-0).

In singles, Kowalczyk made quick work of Alex Barragan at No. 5, defeating him, 6-4, 6-2, while at No. 3, Adrian Barnes knocked out Quentin Blakeney, 6-4, 6-4. Blakeney had previously gone 13-1 in dual match competition. Erik Dmytruk took the match at No. 6, defeating Andrew Metzler, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

At No. 2, freshman Balazs Veress could not get past the aggressive play of Rodrigo Echagaray, losing the only singles point of the match to Kansas. Kintz would also take Kansas' Pete Stroer to a third set tie-break, coming out the victor with a 6-7, 7-6, 7-6(8) win. Kintz improves to 5-0 at the No. 4 spot, while improving to 7-1 in dual match competition.
