Men's Tennis Hosts No. 12 Auburn

ON TAP: The Arizona State men's tennis team (7-6, 2-1 Pac-10) will look to end a three-game skid when they host 12th-ranked Auburn University (7-1) on Saturday, March 24 at 12:00 p.m. at the Whiteman Tennis Center. The Sun Devils hold a 5-1 all-time record against the Tigers, however, in last year's meeting in Auburn, the Tigers came away with a tight 4-3 win.

A LOOK BACK: ASU suffered a rare home loss, falling to the University of San Diego, 4-3. The Toreros took the early advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches for the first point. The Sun Devils claimed the first match on the No. 1 court where Nic Dubey and Matt Klinger defeated Juan Cerda and Ricardo Rizo, 8-4. But, USD quickly followed up with an 8-2 win on the No. 2 court where Jason Pongsrikul and Mattias Tangefjord defeated Jarrod Eckermann and Pim Van Mele, 8-2. The one point came down to an exciting match on the No. 3 court. After breaking each other's serve late in the match, USD's Ross Bourne and Stephen Taylor finally prevailed with a 9-7 win over Mitchell Bowen and Olivier Charroin. In singles action, the two teams split the six matches. ASU went up 2-1 with straight set victories on the fifth and sixth courts. USD came back and tied the dual with its own straight sets victory on the fourth court. The last three matches on the first, second and third courts all went to three sets with USD claiming two of the three. ASU won on the No. 2 court where Klinger defeated Certa, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2, but USD's Tangefjord clinched the dual on the No. 1 court with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 win over Dubey.

SUN DEVILS IN THE RANKINGS: Senior Nic Dubey is ranked 57th in the country, while junior Matt Klinger continues to hold at No. 84. The doubles team of Mitchell Bowen and Klinger are ranked 64th. The next singles and doubles rankings will be released on March 23.

HEAD COACH LOU BELKEN: In his 19th season as head coach, Lou Belken has produced 14 All-Americans, including NCAA singles champion and ATP professional Sargis Sargsian. Belken, the 1999 Pacific-10 Conference Coach of the Year and Region VIII Coach of the Year, has guided the Sun Devils to NCAA postseason berths in nine of the last 13 seasons, including a berth into the NCAA round of 16 in 1999.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Senior Nic Dubey and junior Mirza Duranovic each achieved their 80th career singles victory against LMU ... junior Matt Klinger holds a .714 career winning percentage in singles, recording a 57-23 mark ... this is Duranovic's third straight year of reaching at least 20 wins ... four of ASU's six losses have been by just one point ... Pim Van Mele leads the team in Pac-10 victories with a 4-1 record.

HOME SWEET HOME: Over the past four seasons, including a 7-2 record this year, Arizona State holds a 58-22 (.725) overall dual record at the Whiteman Tennis Center, the Sun Devils will host five more home matches in 2001.
