Swimming Takes 11th In 200 Free Relay At NCAA Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- An 11th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay highlighted Arizona State's performance in the first day of the NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, Thursday at Rec Center Natatorium in College Station, Texas.
The Sun Devils' 200y free relay team of freshman Nick Brunelli, junior Simon MacDonald, sophomore Anders Lyrbring and senior Scott VonSchoff clocked in at 1:19.79 to nip 12th-place Southern Methodist, which touched the wall at 1:19.80. Stanford won the event final in a pool record time of 1:16.83.
Powered by that relay showing, ASU finished the first day of competition tied with Northwestern for 19th-place with 12 points. Texas is the current team leader with 185 points.
In Thursday's other relay, junior Bo West joined MacDonald, Brunelli and VonSchoff in placing 19th in the preliminaries of the 400y medley relay.
Representing ASU in individual action, freshman Gavin Meadows swam 4:24:02 in the 500y freestyle to finish 24th in the preliminaries, while senior diver Marc Briggs scored 268.20 points to place 21st in the prelims of the 1-meter springboard.
Competition continues Friday with event finals in the 200y medley relay, 400y individual medley, 100y butterfly, 200y freestyle, 100y breaststroke, 100y backstroke, 800y freestyle relay, plus 3-meter diving. The race for the national championship concludes Saturday.
