March 23, 2001
TEMPE, Ariz. - University of Oregon redshirt sophomore Jason Slye proved victorious in his collegiate decathlon debut, thanks to a strong finish in Friday's final five events at the Baldy Castillo Invitational.
The Keizer, Ore., native clocked a time of 4:46.36 in the final event, the 1,500 meters, to surpass Kansas State's Pat Pyle for the win. Overall, Slye finished with 6,677 points, edging Pyle (second, 6,594) and Arizona State's Kyle Frerichs (third, 6,558).
'Jason did an awesome job in his first decathlon,' assistant coach Bill Lawson said. 'I'm very happy with his effort, and he was very competitive in all of his marks. He was in second place going into the 1,500 and pulled out it out when it mattered.'
Slye's other final-day marks included 141-9 in the javelin, 16-0 3/4 in the pole vault, 101-11 in the discus and 15.24 in the 110 hurdles. On Thursday he opened with marks of 11.36 in the 100, 19-11 3/4 in the long jump, 37-1 1/4 in the shot put, 5-8 3/4 in the high jump and 49.82 in the 400.
In individual event action, fellow redshirt sophomore javelin thrower John Stiegeler posted his second win and NCAA qualifying mark in as many weeks Friday (230-1), edging Tennessee's Leigh Smith (second, 226-9). Last week at the Oregon Preview, the Coos Bay native Stiegeler upped his personal best by 13 feet with a heave of 238-9 - an NCAA automatic qualifying mark which also moved him to second all-time for the Ducks.
Among remaining Duck action, other solid finishes came courtesy of juniors Santiago Lorenzo and Billy Pappas in the long jump (fifth, 23-3 1/4 and 13th, 22-3 1/2), sophomore James March in the shot put (15th, 49-5 3/4), and junior Tim Overfield in the 400 hurdles (11th, 53.30).
