No. 15 Ranked Softball Earns A Pair Of Wins In New Mexico State Tournament

March 23, 2001

LAS CRUCES, NM - Oregon State's softball team picked up a pair of victories on the opening day of the New Mexico State Tournament. OSU cruised past Texas-San Antonio, 8-1 and then knocked off New Mexico State, 2-0 in the nightcap.

With the wins, the No. 15 ranked Beavers improve to 23-10-1 on the season.

OSU pounded 11 hits in the opener against Texas-San Antonio and got on the board early with a pair of runs in the first inning. Traci Feldt's two-out single to centerfield knocked in Shawna Feldt and Michelle Chariton to give the Beavers the lead for good.

Oregon State added five more runs in the fifth inning as Steph Adams hammered a double to rightfield and knocked in a pair of runs. Traci Feldt belted her first career homerun to follow Adams' at bat and record two more RBI.

The Beavers got their fifth run of the inning after Clare Burnum reached on an error and advanced to third base to set up an RBI single by Brynnen Guthrie. Guthrie, making her first appearance of the season since recovering from re-constructive shoulder surgery, finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Shawna Feldt finished the game hitting 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while her sister Traci Feldt went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Adams also finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI.

Pitcher Crystal Draper picked up the victory to improve to 13-5 on the season.

In the second game, freshman pitcher Monica Hoffman allowed just one hit in seven innings of shutout ball and struckout seven batters.

'Monica Hoffman threw extremely well and defensively we played very solid behind her,' commented OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'We had some standout defensive efforts from Shawna Feldt and Jessica King.'

OSU finished with four hits in the contest and scored both of its runs in the sixth inning. Sophomore Shelly Prochaska led off the inning with a walk and Traci Feldt's one-out single to centerfield knocked in the game-winning run. Aggies centerfielder Lizette Olivares dove and missed Feldt's hit, allowing Prochaska to advance to third. When Olivares recovered, her errant throw to third base allowed Prochaska to score.

'Overall it was definitely a good day,' said Walker. 'We played very well and got stronger as the day went on.

'Traci Feldt had a big day, she had her first career homerun in the first game and her RBI single really opened up the second game.'

Oregon State continues tournament action with a pair of afternoon games Saturday. The Beavers will face Tulsa at 1 p.m. and then face host New Mexico State in a 3 p.m. rematch.
