Prior Throws Encore Performance In Baseball's 8-0 Win
March 23, 2001
TUCSON, Ariz. - Mark Prior threw his second straight complete game, throwing a career-high 15 strikeouts Friday and the No. 9 USC Trojans defeated the Arizona Wildcats, 8-0, in a Pac-10 Conference game at Frank Sancet Field.
Prior (6-1), who was named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for his effort on March 17 at Washington (9 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 14 SO), allowed only three hits and did not allow a walk. He did not allow a runner to advance to second as Prior pitched to just two batters over the minimum.
The 6-5, 220-pound junior from Bonita, Calif., avenged his worst start from last season at Sancet Field. On March 31, 2000, Prior gave up 10 runs on 12 hits in four innings as the Trojans dropped a 11-4 decision to the Wildcats.
In his last four starts (all of them on the road), Prior is 3-1 with a 1.35 ERA. In 33 1/3 innings, he has allowed 22 hits and five earned runs. The most impressive stats, however, are that Prior has struck out 52 batters while allowing only one walk. For the season, Prior has a 1.36 ERA (59 2/3 IP, 36 H, 6 BB, 95 SO).
USC (17-10, 2-2) scored five runs in the first and three in the second with all eight being unearned against Arizona (19-13, 2-2) starter Marc Kaiser, who drops to 5-3 on the season. Seven of the runs came with two outs as three Arizona errors proved costly.
Brian Barre led off the game for the Trojans by reaching first on a throwing error by second baseman Matt Abram, who threw the ball over first baseman Ernie Durazo's head. After a ground ball by Rob Garibaldi, Barre scored on a triple by Anthony Lunetta. Freshman Jon Brewster completed a streak of four straight singles by the Trojans with a two-run single to center to cap the five-run inning.
The Trojans will continue their series with the Wildcats tomorrow and Sunday with a 1 p.m. start for both games. Both games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com (starting at noon Pacific Time).
