Stanford Captures Pac-10 Women's Gymnastics Championship
March 24, 2001
SEATTLE - The sixth-ranked Stanford Cardinal upset top-ranked UCLA to win the 2001 Pac-10 Women's Gymnastics Championship at Washington's Bank of America Arena. The Cardinal posted a score of 197.850, while UCLA, the two-time defending Pac-10 Champions, scored 197.800. Stanford's score was the highest ever at the Pac-10 Championship meet. The victory marked the second time Stanford has won the Pac-10 title. The Cardinal also took top honors in 1998.
Washington used a school-record score of 197.475 to claim third-place honors for the third time in the event's history. Oregon State placed fourth with 196.550 points followed by Arizona State (195.725), Arizona (195.525) and California (193.750).
The Huskies were led by junior Stacy Wong, who won the bars with a score of 9.975 and finished second in the all-around by setting a school record score of 39.725.
'I thought the whole team did extremely well tonight,' Wong said. 'We have had been working very hard in the gym this past week so it was nice to see everyone do so well. Everyone did such a great job on the bars. I wanted to go up there relaxed and just do my job and that is what happened. To set the school record in the all-around at the Pac-10s will be something that will be hard to top.'
Stanford's victory included individual event championships by Caroline Fluhrer on vault (9.975) and a tie for first on beam between teammates Lisa Leveille and Lindsay Wing (9.975). They became the first Cardinal gymnasts to win individual titles on the Pac-10 level. Wing was named the Pac-10 Freshman Gymnast of the Year.
UCLA's Mohini Bhardwaj won the all-around for the second straight year with a meet-record score of 39.800. Bhardwaj was also named the Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year. UCLA's Jamie Dantzscher turned in the event's only perfect score, a 10.000 on floor exercise. It marked the 20th time this season the Bruins have hit a 10.000 during competition.
Stanford began the meet on bars and scored a solid 49.300. The Cardinal took command of the meet in their second rotation when they set a school record on balance beam with a score of 49.575. Lisa Leveille and Lindsay Wing posted identical scores of 9.975 on the event. Stanford kept up the pressure on UCLA by equaling their season-high score on floor exercise with a 49.600 performance. Leveille topped the Cardinal in the event with a score of 9.950 while four other performers scored 9.925.
'I couldn't be more pleased with my team tonight,' said Stanford coach Mark Cook, who was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year. 'We came out and hit 24 of 24 routines and they did a phenomenal job. It was a tough meet and we just wanted to focus on ourselves and our game plan. The girls finished finals this past week so it was awesome to see how they responded. They are a close-knit team with a lot of energy and I am very proud of them.'
