Switzer Strong In Third Career Complete Game In 10-2 Win Over Oregon State
March 24, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Arizona State starting pitcher Jon Switzer turned in his third career complete game to improve to 4-0 on the year and leadoff hitter Mel Stocker was 2-for-5 with two runs scored to help lift the No. 3/5 Sun Devil baseball team to a 10-2 victory over Oregon State in Pac-10 play Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The win improved the Sun Devils' season record to 20-5-1 and are off to a 3-1 start in Pac-10 play. ASU has now won seven of its last eight games. Oregon State dropped to 16-10 on the year and lost its Pac-10 opener. The Beavers had their five game winning streak snapped, with the loss ending a streak in which they had won eight of their last nine games. ASU is now 18-10 overall vs. the Beavers in the all-time series.
'Switzer was sensational for us today coming out strong for all nine innings and turning in just a great performance,' said ASU head coach Pat Murphy who recorded his 93rd career Pac-10 victory. 'Jonah (Martin) and Mel (Stocker) did a lot of good things for us today at the top of the lineup and made things happen for us early in the game. A great way to start the series against a good team like Oregon State.'
The win marked the re-emergence of Switzer, who had suffered three straight no-decisions heading into his start. The hard-throwing left-hander was stellar in his ninth start of 2001, improving to 4-0 with his first complete game of 2001 and the third of his career. He scattered eight hits, allowing two earned runs and struck out 10 in his 161-pitch effort. With a career 22-7 record, Switzer now has 73 strikeouts on the year and 272 in his career.
Arizona State jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two unearned runs in the top of the second inning. Benefiting from two Beaver errors, ASU was staked with only one hit. Senior first baseman Jeff Phelps started the scoring rally with a double to the left field gap. He scored on what appeared to be an inning-ending double play, but an error by OSU third baseman Brian Barden extended the inning and gave ASU the 1-0 lead. Junior Brooks Conrad also reached on a error in the inning and scored ASU's second run on a groundout by third baseman Mike Lopez.
Two infield singles in the top of the third resulted in two runs to extend ASU's lead to 4-0. Junior right fielder Mel Stocker led off the inning with a single to shortstop. After Stocker's 16th stolen base of the year and a drag bunt by Junior Chris Duffy, a balk by Johnson gave the Sun Devils a 3-0 lead to score Stocker. Conrad plated Duffy with a sharp single to center field to cap the two-run rally.
The Beavers threatened in the bottom of the third, but left three men on base, walking away with only one run despite tabbing three hits. Switzer coaxed preseason All-American Brian Barden into a groundout to shortstop Dennis Wyrick to end the threat. Catcher Brian Ingram plated OSU's run with a sharp single to left field.
The Sun Devils exploded for four runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 8-1. Wyrick doubled to left field to start the rally and Stocker recorded his second infield hit of the game to score Lopez. After an RBI groundout by Casey Myers, Stocker stole home with two outs and two strikes with Phelps at the plate. Phelps later singled in his at-bat to right field to cushion ASU's lead to 8-1.
After a 41-minute rain delay, the Sun Devils added two more runs with Conrad plating both runs on a single down the left field line to cap the Devils scoring on the afternoon. ASU was led by Phelps' 3-for-3 game at the plate, tabbing his fourth three-hit game of the year. Stocker was a sparkplug for the Sun Devils at the top of the lineup, scoring two runs, recording two hits and knocking in one more. He also made a spectacular diving catch in right field and stole home. Wyrick also had three hits for ASU. It was the 15th time in 2001 the Sun Devils have scored 10 or more runs.
Oregon State starter Thad Johnson fell to 3-3 on the year, allowing eight runs and eight hits in five innings. Sophomore left-handed relief pitcher Jed Mitchell was impressive out of the bullpen, scattering four hits and two runs in four innings.
Arizona State and Oregon State continue its three-game Pac-10 series Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at Goss Stadium. Redshirt freshman right-hander Mike Esposito (1-0, 4.67) will go to the mound for ASU after a career-best start last weekend at Cal. The Beavers will combat with senior left-hander Scott Nicholson (4-1, 3.75).
